Sete Gibernau was called by Wayne Rainey during the 1996 season to replace Tetsuya Harada in the 250 WGP Yamaha team. He moved to the 500 cc class the following season and joined the official Honda squad in 1998. Sete Gibernau first piloted a V2 machinery then Mick Doohan's V4 NSR after world champion's crash on Jerez track. After a campaign 2000 far from expectations, the Spanish rider contended the two following seasons for Suzuki, which his victory at Valencia was the single positive spot. In 2002, with an under-competitive 4-stroke GSV-R, Sete Gibernau crashed as he was leading wet races at Suzuka and Estoril. 2003 was marked by the death of his new team-mate in Gresini's, Daijiro Kato. Transcended by this tragical death, he claimed four wins and battled out for the title with Valentino Rossi. He did it again in 2004 and finished once more 2nd overal. His lacked of success in 2005 lead him up to sign for Ducati. His season was ruined by a terrible accident at his home race in Barcelona and Sete Gibernau decided to retire from racing. After having taken part in testings for the Italian factory, Sete Gibernau came back in business in 2009 aboard a privateer Ducati. Due to a lack of business, his team withdrew before the mid-season.
