After a brilliant domestic career in Finland, on road and ice, Mika Kallio made his European and Grand Prix debut in 2001. He took part in his first full season in 125 cc in 2002, at the term of which he earned the "rookie of the year" prize. During the 2003 campaign, KTM recruited to replace the reigning champion Arnaud Vincent. He was reamed-up with Casey Stoner in 2004 then became the team leader. Runner-up in 2005 and 2006, he decided to move up in the 250 cc class, still with KTM. Mika Kallio fastly became a firm contender. He took victories along each season he competed but was in a position to battle for the title only in 2006 and 2008 (2nd and 3rd). As KTM decided to withdraw from the quarter-litre category, Mika Kallio joins in 2009 the "junior" Ducati team, Pramac, in MotoGP, alongside Niccolò Canepa.
