Alberto Puig made his Grand Prix debut en 1987 in the 250 cc class. He constantly improved during his first seasons contended on a Yamaha machinery. Riding an Aprilia in 1992, he claimed two podiums and finished the championship in 6th position. In 1994, Sito Pons entrusted him a NSR Honda when the team switched to the premier-class. His rookie season was brilliant with a podium at the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim and a final 5th position behind such experienced riders as Mick Doohan, Luca Cadalora, John Kocinski and Kevin Schwantz. He had a thundering 1995 season start. He scored a victory before his fans in Jerez and two further top-3 finishes at the Italian and Dutch Grand Prix. Unfortunately, Alberto Puig got seriously injured during the French Grand Prix practise sessions. He took part in the two following seasons but never reached again his best level, reaching the podium only once... in Le Mans exactly one year after his crash. Since he retired, he got involved in promising riders detection formulas, like the Movistar Cup. Thus, he helped Dani Pedrosa, Casey Stoner and Toni Elias to start in Grand Prix. Now, he focuses on Dani Pedrosa's career and runs the Red Bull MotoGP Academy.
