500 cc : The rivalry between Valentino Rossi (Honda) and Max Biaggi (Yamaha) reached its highest point during the first round of the season when "the Roman Emperor" tried to push "the Doctor" off the track at Suzuka. In the end, Rossi earned 11 wins out of 16 rounds and clinched the title with a 100 points lead.

250 cc : Tetsuya Harada (Aprilia) thought for a long time that he would be able to clinch the 250 cc world title again but his compatriot Daijiro Katoh (Honda), with 11 wins, claimed it.

125 cc : Manuel Poggiali, until then anonymous in the series, earned 11 podiums, among which 4 wins, to claim the title. Youichi Ui finished once more as runner-up, despite he took the victory in the last four rounds of the season.
